California Healthy Kids Survey Information

Dear parents,

On Thursday, December 12, we will be administering the California Healthy Kids Survey to our 5th grade students.

The survey is intended to gather health and wellness information from school-aged students in California in order to inform the work of health curriculum developers and others who work with student health and wellness in the public sector in our state.

A parent consent form will be sent home on Tuesday with your child. Please sign the form and mark the box indicating whether you give consent for your child to take the survey, or not, and have your child return the form on Wednesday.

Below is more detailed information if you wish to know more.

"Your child is being asked to be a part of our school’s California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), sponsored by the California Department of Education. This is a very important survey that will help promote better health and well-being among our youth, improve the school learning environment, and combat problems such as drug abuse and violence. Your child does not have to take the survey. Participation is voluntary and requires your permission.

Survey Content. The survey gathers information on developmental supports provided to youth; school connectedness and barriers to learning, as well as behaviors such as physical activity and nutritional habits; alcohol, tobacco and other drug use; and school safety.

You may examine the questionnaire in the school office or at your district’s Web site, pvpusd.net.

The results from this survey are compiled into district- and county-level CHKS Reports. To view a copy of your district’s report, go to https://calschls.org/reports-data/search-lea-reports/ (Outside Source) and type in the district name.

It is Voluntary. Students who, with your permission, agree to participate do not have to answer any questions they do not want to answer, and may stop taking the survey at any time.

It is Anonymous. No names are recorded or attached to the survey forms or data. The results will be made available for analysis only under strict confidentiality controls.

Administration. The survey will be administered on Thursday, December 12, 2019. It will take about one class period to complete (about 50 minutes) and will be administered in your child’s 5th grade class.

Potential Risks. There are no known risks of physical harm to your child. Risks of psychological or social harm are very small. None have been reported in 17 years of survey administration. In rare instances, some discomfort might be experienced from the questions. The school’s counseling services will be available to answer any personal questions that may materialize.

For Further Information. The survey was developed by WestEd, a public, non-profit educational institution. If you have any questions about this survey, or about your rights, please contact your school administration or the PVPUSD Educational Services Division at (310) 378-9966."

French Pen Pal Club starts today!

As I have done for many years, I will be offering my students the opportunity to have a pen pal in France!
A friend of mine is French and teaches English in a small, rural town in western France called Montmorillon. Her students are the equivalent of 6th graders and attend the Cite Scolaire Jean Moulin.
Students will exchange 3-4 letters throughout the course of the year.
This is totally voluntary and for fun!
At the end of the year students can exchange home addresses if they wish and keep writing. I have former students who are in high school and still writing to their pen pals!
For instructions and a sample of the first letter, please see the "French Pen Pal Club" section near homework to the right.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Chapter 2 Test Alert

We will have a science test over chapter two of your science textbook on Thursday, October 24. Practice writing about each item on the test alert, study your science textbook, and review your science journal in order to be ready for the test.

PEN STEM Camp Paperwork

The PEN high robotics team is running a STEM camp just for 5th graders!
They are offering four separate classes over four Fridays after school.
All of the information is attached.
The students who went last year had a great time and they have added to and improved the program since last year!

Chapter 1 Journal Grading Sheet

To be sure you have finished everything in your journal, use this checklist. This will be the same form I use to give you your grade. It will be glued into your journal when I give it back to you.
Journals are due this Friday, September 27. If you turn yours in early on Wednesday or Thursday, you can earn 5 points of extra credit.
Let me know if you have any questions!
