A BIG thank you!

Dear Room 6 Families,
I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all of you who were so kind and generous to me with holiday gifts, cards, and thoughtful words.  I was so appreciative of the class gift, which was basically a collection of all of my favorite things!  I will be enjoying the lovely teas and indulging in a little shopping well into the new year!  It is a great blessing to be a teacher at Silver Spur and I am so grateful.
I hope you all had a restful, fun holiday break!
Mrs. Nguyen

Welcome back!

January is always a growing time for our students.  Now that we are well into the 2nd trimester, your child knows the routine and is learning new, more challenging 2nd grade concepts.  Here's a quick snapshot of where we've been and where we're going!
Key Concepts that we've learned in the first trimester:
Math: place value/numbers to 1,000, addition and subtraction to 1,000 (including regrouping), basic review of patterns, money, time, even and odd
Reading: foundational review of phonics/decoding and blending, short and long vowel sounds, and reading skills and comprehension strategies
Writing: foundational skills of the parts of a sentence, creating a paragraph, editing/revising, spelling practice
Social Studies: map skills, community, traditions
Science: Rocks and minerals, dinosaurs and fossils (Earth Science)
Key Concepts we have started/will be covering in the 2nd trimester:
Math: bar modeling (with continued application of addition and subtraction skills), problem solving strategies, introduction to multiplication and division (as repeated addition and subtraction), more in depth application of patterns, money, time and measurement
Reading: close reading strategies, identifying main idea versus supporting details, continued phonics skill building, summarizing
Writing: more in depth work with paragraphs, sentence variety, detail, editing and revising, spelling practice
Social Studies: heritage/ancestor dolls, beginning of "Many Special People" (biographies)
Science: Forces and Motion, Sound (Physical Science)
Thank you for working as a team with me in your child's education!  Your time and effort help significantly.
