Habits of Mind
Habits of Mind includes a system of behaving intelligently when confronted with challenges.  I love to teach the kids how to implement Habits of Mind into their everyday life.  All fourth graders can make use of managing their impulsivity.  It is also in direct alignment with our math programming; striving for accuracy, thinking about your thinking, questioning and problem-posing...  It is brilliant!   This is where I start my behavior management.

Starr Bucks!
In our homeroom and in Mrs. Cummin's room students will keep a checkbook style register of their earnings.  Students will earn "dollars" for positive behaviors displayed, on-task behavior, teamwork, classroom job assignment, completion of weekly homework assignments, display of leadership skilss, etc.  Students will be awarded dollars throughout the day and they will need to track earnings so that they are able to participate in the class auction which will take place at the conclusion of each trimester.  Parent assistance will be needed to make these events a success.

Students may also loose or "pay-out" dollars when poor choices are made and several re-directs are needed to achieve desired behavior.  As independence and responsibility are a requirement for Middle School we will also employ a money pay-out when students are unprepared with a pencil or didn't use the restroom at recess.  Students will begin to see that they are in charge of their outcomes and if they need to use the restroom during class time, a single pay-out is not the end of the world - but maybe next time they will manage their time better!  A great way to instill independence.  As students earn cash readily and regularly, a single pay-out is peanuts in comparison!

Think Sheet
Sometimes kids just need to move, may need a change of scenery or may need to be removed from a task.  I have found this to be a very effective tool and a last resort.  I never want students to be removed from my classroom and removed from learning.  However, sometimes their little brains are on overload and their bodies cannot keep them from disrupting others.  In this case, when several re-directs haven't worked, I request that they go outside beneath the tree and write out a Think Sheet or my Courtesy Contract.  It is an aimless task, but it has important words and things to think about.  And sometimes, it is just what a little body needs to re-set and come back engaged and ready to attend.

PBIS
PBIS is our new school wide behavior plan.  It stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Support.  We are able to set clearly defined agreed upon expectations and find ways to motivate students toward making positive choices.  Below is our matrix and expectations for upper grade students.
