Green Team Initiatives - Silver Spur Earth Ambassadors

Submit photos of yourself completing GREEN TASKS at home to share ways in which YOU are an Earth Ambassador!  Examples might include putting a bucket in the shower beneath you and then watering your garden using the gray-water.  You could also plant some flowers to increase opportunity for pollination to occur.  Share what you are doing with your school community as part of your commitment to being an Earth Ambassador.  Submissions will be added to a lottery for prizes to be announced at Friday Assemblies!

Community in ACTION!
Malaga Cove Blue Water Task Force
Silver Spur, along with PVPUSD's Sustainability Committee is asking the community to get involved!

Program Goal:  To educate students and community while raising awareness of local water quality and empower our members in the South Bay area to address these issues.

The South Bay Chapter's Blue Water Task Force Teach and Test program is a massive collaborative effort between chapter volunteers, students, faculty supervisors and the following schools: Parras Middle School, Palos Verdes High School, El Segundo High School, Redondo Union High School, Lawndale High School and now Palos Verdes Unified Elementary and Middles School community members!

Our High School students have developed a team under the direction our our PVPUSD affiliate PV School Gardens.  This team will take bi-monthly water samples and collect data.  By the Spring of 2024 students will analyze findings and present a possible project to help direct the next step of this twenty-first century NGSS hands-on learning.

The last few water samples have demonstrated contamination at the Malaga Cove drainage site!  Check the website for South Bay's most up-to-date data:  Latest Data for South Bay Surfrider Foundation Teach and Test Project Link

As a community - we can contribute!
PVPUSD Middle School and Elementary students, along with their families, can register to meet Mrs. Nagdev at the beach for a one-hour commitment to complete a waste characterization of our storm drain at Malaga Cove.  This will help our Teen Team with their project and give us a better understanding of our environmental impact.  Students are also welcome to develop their own project or solutions to share with our community.  We will then log our data and contribute to the overall study which will supply our Teen Team in developing a clear picture and add to their project.
A community in action with a shared goal of healthy beaches and coastlines.

Sponsored by the West Basin Municipal Water District.

The Land Conservancy is preparing “Butterfly Baskets” for sale in fall and spring to help make it easier for homeowners and apartment dwellers to support the threatened species we all love. One basket will provide you with four plants to put in the ground (or into a super large pot) and you can pre-order spring baskets for pick up in March 2022. If you’d like to spread the word, ask your neighbors if they will join you in planting some natives to create a waystation for butterflies. Or you might call the Conservancy to arrange a butterfly birthday bash with friends, where you make ten (or so) pots available and throw an outdoor planting party, where each of your guests goes home with a butterfly flower and pot. The butterflies will arrive later, with the right plants in place to attract them!

rainb
"My Rain Barrel filled up after just a light sprinkle!  West Basin Water District delivered a free barrel to my house.  The set up was super easy and with each of the three light rains we have had this year- my barrel has been filled allowing me to fully water my garden multiple times.  I want to order a second barrel" ~ Mrs. Nagdev

Current Silver Spur Green Team Initiatives:

Fall/Winter 2023
  • Collect organic waste tableside at lunch time
    • Coordinate tableside organic waste collection with pick-up day from our trash collection (to eliminate pest problems)
    • Investigate long term solution to pest/organic waste collection
  • Earn service minutes by assisting Ms. Sharon in kitchen for our new scratch-made foods

Spring 2022
  • Recycle Milk Cartons
  • Recycle Lunch Trays
  • Green Team visits each classroom and ensures bins are brought to recycling

Progress:  We are now recycling over 200 milk cartons a day which would have gone into the landfill.  Ms. Judith says that the trash bin is nearly empty each week and our recycle bins are now FULL!  Way to go Silver Spur!
