4/27 - 5/1 Monday - Friday Self-Paced Week!

This happy pair are Toby and Sadie Tsai - two very lucky little doggies!
**********************************************************************
This week is a little different - please read carefully!
Because you all have your science fair presentations this week
you will be working through the assignments for my class at your own pace.
Each one of you is doing your presentation on a different day and time.
Some of you have a scheduled Zoom time and some are doing it whenever you are ready
on Flipgrid or as a Power Point.
I didn't want anyone to have one day this week where you had BOTH your presentation to do PLUS your regular work.
There are 4 days worth of assignments.
The 5th day (whichever one you choose) is for you to focus on your science fair presentation.

You have 4 different "chunks" of assignments below.
They are clearly separated from each other.
Do them at whatever pace works best for you.
Make sure to plan it out so that you don't have too much left at the end of the week!

Spelling for this week...

Chunk #1
Mystery Science - What are the wandering stars?
Today you will be watching several short video segments on Mystery Science. Keep advancing using the blue arrows until you get to the end of the videos and the activity portion begins.
Part 1 : Watch the video segments and take the quiz. Watch the videos segments about the "wandering stars". Before you start, look over the quiz (linked below) to see what the questions are so that you can answer them as you watch. They are in the same order as in the video.

Part 2 : For extra credit do the activity part of this Mystery Science lesson. We would normally do this out on the playground if we were in school together.

Here are a few suggestions for changes to make the activity easier and more simple.
  • All you need for this activity is a ruler / tape measure, sidewalk chalk, and the AU distance chart we created in our 2:00 Zoom session last week. (If you missed the session go to 4/24.5 on the right-hand side of my Edlio page to complete the activity using the Power Point).
  • If you don't have a toilet paper tube or string you can just use a ruler or tape measure and mark off a 30 foot line OR 30, one-foot segments on the sidewalk or in your driveway. Put a mark every 12 inches so you have a total of 30 of them.
  • For the purposes of this activity, one foot (12 inches) represents one AU, like we learned about in our Zoom session last week.
  • Use the worksheet we did together last week in the 2:00 Zoom session to do this activity, not the worksheet Doug has on Mystery Science.
  • If a planet is 1.4 AU from the sun, then it would be 1 foot 4 inches from the sun. If it's 6.8 AU then it would be 6 feet 8 inches from the sun, and so forth.

Go through the activity part of the lesson with Doug, modifying it to suit the materials that you are using.
You will end up with a very long drawing that is a representation of the approximate distance from the sun to each of the 8 planets!
When you are done send me a picture of your finished product OR a video of it to get the extra credit!

Chunk #4
Crash Course Kids "Gravity" + Quiz

The quiz you will take covers both the Crash Course Kids video AND the content of your science textbook. The answers are found in one or both of these. All of it is about gravity.

Read over the quiz first so you know what you are listening for. You may already know some of the answers from your textbook when you took notes. There will also be other things NOT in your textbook that are only in the video.
